How to choose the right colour for your home? Tips & Ideas

Picture
A house well painted is a house well done. Beautiful walls can create ambience you need to relax and unwind. Decor too put up their best when there is a complimenting backdrop. With so much importance credited to the walls, we cannot take wall painting easy. A lot of things need to be taken care of while settling for that perfect colour scheme. Here are a few things you should go through that will ensure you to bring the best out of the walls.

1. How big is your room ?

As you may have noticed darker shades of a colour for a small room can make it look smaller and dingier. Go for a lighter hue like white or off-white for a brighter room. Now, that does not mean you cannot have those darker shades at all. Decors in the room can serve you the canvas!

2. Do not ignore the light factor

Whether its the natural sunlight, fluorescent ones or the incandescent tubes, lighting can have a major impact on the paints. Accent walls, which we usually love to have in a darker and vibrant shade will be best when its against a bright source of light.

3. Take a test drive

Since painting is a once-in-a-few years affair, play safe with choosing the colours. Paints on the walls can look way different from what it does in the catalogue. So, its always better to go for a sample painting session either in the store room or powder room.

4. Atmosphere to be created

Your rooms are the reflectors of your personality. Some like the soothing, calm atmosphere while those with energy overdose and peppiness love vibrance in the room. Kids will love a playful orange or green while your aged parents will definitely need a more soothing colour like beige or off white for their room.

5. Paint finishes and textures for a dramatic effect

Different types of paint finishes can give depth to the room even when the colour remains the same. An accented walls get richer with a metallic finish when the rest of the walls give a subtle look with no sheen. The look of the room can be deepened with the trims getting painted in a different hue or finish. Monochromatic colours for the walls and the trims with different finishes can bring in cohesiveness. Paints with a glossier finish will be a good pick if there are naughty kids at home to make walls their canvas.

6. Ceiling - the 5th wall

Ceilings are often ignored while painting a room. It is not just a plane from where we hang a fan or light. Just like any other walls, ceiling, when given a little importance can heighten the rich look of the space.
